Equipment under COLREG 72

Equipment Testing and Approval Services under COLREG 72

The COLREG 72 (Collision Regulations), the most fundamental set of rules applied worldwide to prevent collisions at sea, imposes strict technical requirements for vessels to detect each other and establish communication. As GTL (Global Technology Laboratory), we certify that all your equipment, from navigation lights to audible signaling devices, fully complies with COLREG Annex 1 and relevant international standards.

LED Lighting Systems for Navigation
LED navigation lights, which are becoming increasingly common in modern maritime navigation, must strictly comply with the requirements of COLREG 72 Annex 1 for safe navigation. Tests conducted in our laboratories include:

  • Light Characteristics and Visibility: Verification that LED lights perform within the sector angles, color sensitivity, and range values specified in the regulations.
  • Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC): Confirming that lighting systems operate stably without emitting electromagnetic interference that could damage other sensitive navigation equipment on board and without being affected by such interference.

Audible Signal Devices (Whistles, Bells, and Gongs)
Audible signal devices, which are vital in limited visibility conditions at sea or during maneuvers, are subject to specific requirements that vary depending on the length of the vessel. GTL tests the acoustic performance and durability of this equipment:

  • Whistle Systems: Sound intensity and frequency analysis of whistles, which are mandatory for all vessels 12 meters and above.
  • Bell Tests: Acoustic verification of bell systems, which are additionally required for vessels 20 meters and above.
  • Gong Systems: Sound propagation capacity of gong systems, which are mandatory on large-scale vessels 100 meters or longer in length.

Technical Authority for Safe Navigation
COLREG equipment must remain functional under the harsh effects of the marine environment, such as corrosion, high humidity, and vibration. As GTL, we raise maritime safety standards by testing the critical equipment of domestic and foreign manufacturers through our processes that comply with TSE and international maritime authorities. The certification of your products is not only a legal compliance but also a commitment to maritime safety.
